A European directive of 2008, called ” Return Directive “, fixed to 18 months the maximum period of detention of irregular aliens , that is to say, people who have committed no crime or offense, but not having a residence permit. 18 months of confinement is huge. It is worse in inhuman and degrading conditions like in Greek detention centers.

Greece has decided to extend the detention beyond the maximum allowed by EU legislation. It is officially not detention, but “compulsory residence in a place of detention”. The measure is aimed at people who could not been expeled, and who have not accepted a proposal of voluntary return”.

The measure has already been implemented, and exiles are being signify an extension of six months of their detention beyond 18 months already made. Whence new revolts in some detention centers.
